9th Bhutan University Sports Federation Games Conclude with Thrilling Football Finals at Samtse College of Education

After six days of intense competition and camaraderie, the 9th Bhutan University Sports Federation (BUSF) Games came to an exciting conclusion at Samtse College of Education on December 17, 2024. The closing ceremony marked the culmination of an event that celebrated both athletic achievements and the spirit of friendship and collaboration.
Lungtaen Gaytso, the president of CLCS, was the chief guest at the closing ceremony. The games, which began on December 11, were scheduled to coincide with Bhutan’s 117th National Day, making the final day particularly significant. The day started with a special prayer session in the Prayer Hall, where butter lamps were lit, followed by a short prayer. This was followed by the Marchang ceremony, national anthem, and Zhabten, adding to the cultural richness and reverence of the occasion.
The football finals were one of the day’s major highlights. In the women’s football final, PCE triumphed with a dominant 2-0 victory, while Paro College emerged as the men’s football champions. PCE received a cash prize of Nu 7,000, while runners-up Sherubtse took home a Nu 5,000 cash prize. In the men’s football final, Paro College claimed the title with a Nu 7,000 cash prize, while JNEC finished as the runners-up, receiving Nu 5,000.
The women’s final football match was paused in a moment of deep respect for His Majesty the King’s highly anticipated National Day speech. Both players and spectators, eager to hear the address, embraced the pause with a shared sense of anticipation and reverence. This thoughtful interlude allowed everyone to listen attentively, reflecting on the profound significance of the speech, and underscored the importance of the national spirit

The volleyball finals were played yesterday, with Paro College claiming victory in the women’s competition, securing a Nu 5,000 cash prize, and Samtse College taking the runner-up position with a Nu 3,000 cash prize. In the men’s volleyball final, Gedu won the title, while Sherubtse finished as the runners-up, both teams receiving similar cash prizes.
Basketball finals were also held yesterday. In the women’s competition, Paro College secured the championship, winning Nu 15,000 cash prize from the Basketball Federation Of Bhutan – BFB and Nu 5,000 from Bhutan University Sports Federation, while CNR finished as runner-up receiving Nu.10,000 from BFB and Nu. 3000 from BUSF. In the men’s final, Gedu took the top prize, receiving Nu 15,000 from the BFB and Nu. 5,000 from BUSF, while CNR finished as runners-up, receiving Nu 10,000 from BFB and Nu. 3000 from BUSF.
The flags of all participating colleges were lowered and handed over to their respective institutions. The BUSF and FISU flags were then presented to the Dean of Student Affairs of CNR, as they will host the 10th Winter Games, marking the official handover of responsibilities for the next edition of the games.
With the conclusion of the competition and award ceremony, students and athletes began their journey home for the winter break, bringing to a close a successful and memorable event. The 9th BUSF Games not only celebrated athletic excellence but also strengthened the bonds among Bhutanese students through friendly competition.

Celebrating Years of Service and Dedication

On the morning of December 14, 2024, the College hosted its much-anticipated Dedicated Service Award ceremony at Rigpa Hall, where staff members gathered to honor their colleagues for years of devoted service. The event recognized those who had made significant contributions to the institution over the course of their careers.

The ceremony began at 9:00 AM, with the College community coming together to celebrate the achievements of the award recipients. The awards were presented to individuals who had reached milestones of ten, twenty, and thirty years of service, as well as the prestigious Lifetime Civil Service Award.

Tshering Dorji, a Lecturer, and Chundu Dorji, the Library Assistant, were recognized, each receiving the Dedicated Service Award for completing ten years of service to the College. The award for twenty years of dedication was presented to Sukman Rai, the College’s long-serving Cook, who has been an integral part of the institution’s daily operations.

The most distinguished group of awardees, those with thirty years of service, included Dr. Tashi Gyeltshen, Assistant Professor, Ms. Kezang Choden, Assistant Professor, Ms. Ugyen Pem, Assistant Professor, and Ms. Sabita Darjee, messenger. Their unwavering commitment and contributions over the decades were celebrated with heartfelt appreciation.

The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Lifetime Civil Service Award to Dr. Sonam Daker, Assistant Professor. Having joined service in 1986 as a teacher, Dr. Daker has built a long and distinguished career, leaving an indelible mark on the College. Her remarkable dedication to education, along with her profound impact on both students and colleagues, made her a pillar of the institution. The Lifetime Civil Service Award recognized not only her exceptional career but also her enduring influence on the academic and cultural life of the College.

Reflecting on his thirty years of service, Dr. Tashi Gyeltshen shared his satisfaction: “I am proud to have served the nation for thirty years, with no regrets and no missteps along the way. It has been a fulfilling journey.”

The ceremony was a heartfelt tribute to the dedication, loyalty, and hard work of the award recipients. As tradition dictates, the College served Suja and Desi to all staff members, creating a warm and festive atmosphere that further enhanced the sense of unity and celebration.

This year’s awards ceremony not only recognized individual achievements but also strengthened the bonds within the College, as staff members reflected on the years of collective effort that continue to shape the institution’s success.

Intake admission for the self-finance students into PgDCCP (Counselling) and PgDE (Teaching) Programme – 2025 Intake

Samtse College of Education is pleased to announce the intake of the self-finance students for admission into two academic programmes: Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PgDE) and Postgraduate Diploma in Contemplative Counselling Psychology (PgDCCP) programmes for the academic year 2025-2026.

Postgraduate Diploma in Contemplative Counselling Psychology (PgDCCP)

  • Title of the Award :                                Postgraduate Diploma in Contemplative Counselling Psychology
  • Mode of study  :                                      Full-time on campus
  • Duration of the programme :              18 months (3 semesters)

Entrance Requirements for the PgDCCP Programme

For entry into the programme, a candidate must fulfill the following academic criteria:

  1. Students with a minimum of 50% aggregate from Bachelor’s Degree will be shortlisted for the programme.
  2. The shortlisted students will sit for an online selection interview.
  3. Assurance of ability to pay the tuition fees.

Candidates who fulfil the above criteria may submit your copy of Academic Transcripts of Bachelor’s Degree, CID and Contact No to the Programme Leader by email attachment to (wdorji.sce@rub.edu.bt) with a copy to the Dean of Academic Affairs (kgyeltshen.sce@rub.edu.bt), SCE, on or before December 27, 2024.

The shortlisted candidates will have the written test and viva voce, and the date will be announced later as determined by the College in addition to the criteria set by the programme.

Candidates will be merit ranked and selected by the panel members of the PgDCCP programme committee, Samtse College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan based on the following criteria:

Excitement and Unity Mark the Opening of the 9th Bhutan University Sports Federation Games

The 9th Bhutan University Sports Federation (BUSF) Games commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony at Samtse College of Education on December 11, 2024. This marked the beginning of a week-long celebration of sportsmanship and competition among the 10 participating colleges.

The ceremony began at 8 a.m. at the college football ground, where participants and spectators gathered in high spirits. Dasho Dzongdag Minjur Dorji of Samtse graced the event as the chief guest, receiving a warm welcome from the enthusiastic crowd. In his address, Dasho Dzongdag highlighted Bhutan’s remarkable progress in sports, noting that athletes have grown in confidence and improved their performances on regional and international platforms. He emphasized that the university games embody core values such as resilience, unity, respect, inclusivity, gratitude, joy, and humility.

Following the speeches, a marching parade captivated the audience as students proudly represented their colleges, with banners held high in the morning breeze. A symbolic highlight of the ceremony was the lighting of the BUSF flame, passed in a relay by athletes from each college, celebrating unity and the competitive spirit.

The Dean of Student Affairs and the chief guest reiterated the importance of sports in education. Dr. Kezang Sherab, Chair of BUSF, underscored the holistic value of the games, stating, “These games are an essential part of university education. The lessons students learn on the field—about teamwork, resilience, and leadership—can be more impactful than those learned within the classroom walls.”

The sports action kicked off with a thrilling football match between the College of Natural Resources (CNR) and Paro College of Education (PCE). PCE dominated with a 5-2 victory, with standout player Kinley Gyeltshen scoring four goals.

In volleyball, Sherubtse College narrowly defeated Gedu College of Business Studies (GCBS) in a thrilling five-set match. Meanwhile, in women’s football, Guru Dema and Yangchen Lhamo secured victory for CLCS against Gyelpozhing College with a score of 2-0.

Basketball games added to the excitement, with the boys from CNR triumphed over Jigme Namgyel Engineering College (JNEC) with a score of 45-26, while the CNR girls’ team edged past GCBS in a close 32-29 match. On the volleyball court, the women’s team from Paro College triumphed over the host college, Samtse College of Education (SCE), in straight sets.

The opening day of the BUSF Games was a testament to sportsmanship, teamwork, and friendly competition, leaving athletes and spectators eager for the events ahead. The week-long games will culminate on December 17th, coinciding with Bhutan’s National Day, providing a fitting conclusion to this inspiring celebration of unity and athletic excellence.

A Night of Pride and Tradition: Samtse College of Education Celebrates MEd Graduation 2024

Samtse College of Education, under the Royal University of Bhutan, marked a significant milestone with the M.Ed Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2024 on November 29. The event, imbued with grandeur and cultural richness, celebrated the academic achievements of the graduates while highlighting the college’s commitment to excellence and tradition.

The ceremony commenced in the early evening, as students, staff, and invited guests gathered alongside the Chief Guest. Between 5:15 PM and 5:40 PM, attendees arrived, setting the stage for a memorable event. The formal proceedings began with the ceremonial lighting of the butter lamp and the recitation of Tashi Tsepka, followed by the national anthem and His Majesty’s Zhabten at 5:50 PM, instilling a sense of reverence and unity.

An engaging welcome address opened the event, paving the way for an inspiring speech from the Chief Guest, who commended the graduates for their dedication and hard work. The evening unfolded with vibrant cultural performances, showcasing Bhutan’s rich heritage and adding a celebratory tone to the occasion.

Recognitions of academic excellence were a key highlight, with awards presented to outstanding graduates in the M.Ed Mathematics and B.A. in Social Work programs. These accolades underscored the institution’s emphasis on nurturing talent and fostering academic distinction. Adding a personal and reflective touch to the ceremony, Sonam Wangchuk, an M.Ed Biology graduate, delivered a heartfelt valedictory speech. His words encapsulated the collective journey of the graduating class, their challenges, and their aspirations for the future.

The event also acknowledged contributions beyond academics. Exemplary class coordinators and the counselor were honored for their leadership and commitment. Literary achievements under The Literary Landscape program and recognition of the Champion House for Autumn 2024 highlighted the diverse accomplishments of the students.

As the ceremony drew to a close, Counselor Tandin delivered a Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the event’s success. The evening culminated in a formal Graduation Dinner at 7:30 PM, where faculty, graduates, and guests came together to celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2024 in a spirit of camaraderie and joy.

This event marked the recognition of the hard work and dedication of our incredible teachers who completed professional development courses aimed at transforming STEM education in Bhutan.
