The Center for Social Science and Humanities Education and Research is one of six academic divisions of Samtse College of Education. The centre brings together the faculties of Geography; History; Economics, Health and Physical Education, Creative Arts and Business Studies. The Center would work on five key strategic areas of focus and development. These include: producing highest quality research; provision and widening access of Social Science Education; development of its academic standard and quality; wider engagement with local and international communities; and attracting the highest caliber academics from around the country and the world.

Bhupen Gurung is a teacher educator and Head of the Centre for Social Science and Humanities Education and Research of Samtse College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan. He teaches business studies education, economics education, educational assessment and evaluation and pedagogical principles and methods at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In the capacity of Centre Head, he provides strategic leadership in teaching, research, programme development and partnership building in social science disciplines. He believes in fostering multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary approaches of learning, teaching and research through collaboration and knowledge sharing among various disciplines to promote deeper insights on emerging social issues at local, national and international level. One of his current efforts includes development of modules for Bachelor of Arts in social work.
He was a school teacher for several years during which he provided strategic leadership in pedagogical approaches and curriculum development. He taught subjects such as Accountancy, Commerce and Mathematics and supported in designing questions and marking answer scripts at national level.
His writings have focused on the improving quality of education through assessment practices, promoting entrepreneurship education and the interplay between local culture and modernity in Bhutan. He is a member of the subject committee for Accountancy and Commerce of Royal Education Council and provides support in curriculum design and review.

Harihara Subramonian .P is a lecturer at Samtse College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan. He teaches Geography Education, Social Studies, Teaching methods in Upper Primary, Teaching Skills and Teaching Strategies at the postgraduate and undergraduate level. He has presented his paper on " Bhutanese Geography Curriculum Standards Vis-à-vis International Standards” during the Geography Conference organized by the Social Studies Centre on September 31st 2016. Currently he is playing the role of a teacher Educator and as the Exam Secretary. As a teacher educator, he believes that the basic purpose of education is to help each child make use of their unique potential. It is teacher’s responsibility to encourage our students to identify and nurture their strong aptitude areas and the potentials.
Previously, Harihara Subramonian .P served as a Teacher at Damphu Higher Secondary School, Tsirang. As a Teacher he served as a faculty member of DHSS and has taught Geography and History. Currently he is playing the role of the Exam secretary in the college.
Kuenzang Gyeltshen is a teacher educator and is currently an Assistant Professor of Samtse College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan. He is the first faculty from Samtse College of Education to get National of Merit (Gold Medal) for Academic Excellence from His Majesty the King on 17th December 2013 and the first faculty member from RUB to undergo Senior Executive Leadership Program (SELP-5) at the Royal Institute for Governance and Strategic Studies. He has MA in Geography from Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, India, Postgraduate Certificate in Education from National Institute of Education, Samtse, Bhutan and BA with Honours in Geography from Sherubtse College, Kanglung, Bhutan.
He was the Dean of Academic Affairs at Samtse College of Education for several years during which he has promoted academic standard at diversifies programmes at Samtse College of Education. He has taught Action Research, Bhutanese Education System, Teaching Strategies, Teaching Skills, Social Studies, Geography and Geography Education at the postgraduate and undergraduate levels. He is actively engaged in policy writing, programme development, partnership building and promoting Learning and teaching in schools and Higher Education Institutions in Bhutan. Currently he is leading the development of Masters in Education in Geography at the college.
He trains teachers, faculty of RUB and other Tertiary Institutions in Learning and Teaching, Assessment and Providing Meaningful feedback as he is very passionate about the need for teachers to engage in continuous learning and development. He has also played a very active role in reforming the school Geography and Social Studies curriculum for the Ministry of Education. He believes that research is very important for enhancing learning and teaching and have conducted several researches to improve learning and teaching besides other research activities he has carried out within Bhutan for international organization as a lead researcher.
He provides policy and programmatic support to agencies engaged in education. He is an elected Chairman of Social Studies Subject Committee since May 2018 and Vice Chairman of Geography Subject Committee for Royal Education Council, Ministry of Education since 2017, He has been the Member of Programmes and Quality Committee, Royal University of Bhutan since 2014, Board Member, Bhutan Ecological Society since 2013. He was the Member of Academic Board and Admission Committee of the Royal University of Bhutan from 2012 to 2016.
Mr. Pema Chopel is a lecturer, currently serving as a Programme Leader for Bachelor of Education, Secondary (B.Ed.Sec.) at Samtse College of Education (SCE), Royal University of Bhutan. He has completed his Master of Physical Education (M.PEd) and Master of Public Administration (MA.Pub. Admn.) from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, India. His subject of specialization is in Health and Physical Education (HPE) and he has also taught other professional modules such as Curriculum Theories, Teaching Skills and Strategies, Bhutanese Education System to undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has been engaged in designing and developing course modules related to Bachelor of Social Work programme such as Welfare Administration and Community Health and Well- Being. He has also actively participated and contributed his expertise in designing the school based HPE curriculum for Classes IV to VI.
Prior to his present job at SCE, he had served as a teacher in Woochhu Lower Secondary School, Paro and Loselling Lower Secondary School, Thimphu. Besides being a teacher he was also a National Soccer player of Bhutan for ten years (1999-2009) and has represented our country in the prestigious international tournaments. Currently, he is also an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) “B” and “C” international licensed coach for the soccer as well.
Ramesh Kumar Chhetri is a teacher educator and a subject leader for History in Samtse College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan. He has taught subjects like history, history education, pedagogical principles and methods, curriculum studies, and education for development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Before joining the college in 2013, he was a school teacher for ten years during which he served the schools at various capacities in taking the schools to a greater height. He is passionate about teaching and making a difference in children’s lives. He is conscious of engaging students in developing and using core research skills and enabling them to have an impact beyond their academic study.
Tashi moved from Eastern Bhutan to Southern Bhutan to render his service to the nation since at his young age and currently he is working as History Lecturer in Samtse College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan since 2016. He has earned Bachelor Degree in Geography from Delhi University in the year 2007 and graduated with Post Graduate Diploma in Education in History and Geography from Samtse College of Education in 2008. Prior to his joining in the College of Education as Lecturer he has served as fulltime Secondary School Teacher at Sarpang Higher Secondary School for more than seven years teaching History, Geography and Economics. He served the school with utmost fidelity and he was recognized as Best Educator, awarding him the National Level ‘Teaching of Excellence’ Certificates for successive five years (2011-2015). His current three years of tertiary level teaching experience involves teaching of Bhutan History, Constitution of Bhutan, Imperialism since 1919, world history in general, Teaching Skills and strategies, Education for Development and Research skills on writing local history and family history for both undergraduate and post graduate levels. Apart from his teaching he undertook various managerial responsibilities as Provost (2016), Dealing with students disciplinary issues (2016-2017), Immersion of Culture to the students since 2016, Class Advisor since 2016.
Mr. Tashi is also interested in providing social services and currently he is Bhutan Toilet Organization’s Ambassador to Samtse Dzongkhag and also Democracy Club In-charge advocating civic education to the society on various fields.
Despite his interest in providing social services, he is passionate in conducting the Academic Research. He supervised more than eight Research of Local History and approximately thirty on writing family History. Currently he is working on two independent research on “Biogas as an alternative source of Energy in Rural Bhutan” and “Military system during Theocratic Era of Bhutan”.
