Books, Creativity, and Connection: Celebrating International Library Day at SCE
The Library, in collaboration with the Library Club, marked International Library Day on October 24, 2025, celebrating the joy of books, reading, and learning. Observed worldwide, this day recognises the role of libraries in inspiring curiosity and fostering knowledge, and the library’s morning-long celebration brought these ideals to life through interactive activities for students, faculty, and staff.
The celebration featured a series of interactive and engaging activities designed to rekindle students’ love for books. Among the programme highlights were a Book Exhibition on five different themes, a Wish Tree, Creative Bookmark Making, Blind Date with a Book, and a Library Selfie Wall. The Blind Date with a Book activity, which invited students to select wrapped books without knowing their titles or authors, drew curiosity from students and staff alike. Many discovered genres and stories they might not normally pick, adding an element of surprise and adventure to reading. Participating in the Blind Date with a book, one of the faculty members said: “I picked a book that said it would make me cry, but it turned out to be a book of jokes! I guess sometimes you think you want one thing, but a life or rather a book, gives you something even better.”
Meanwhile, Guess the Highly Circulated Book sparked lively discussions about popular titles on campus, including The 5 AM Club by Robin Sharma, Atomic Habits by James Clear, and the students’ growing interest in Bhutanese literature, highlighting both reading trends and the diverse literary tastes within the college. Students also enjoyed the Information Game and a Lucky Draw, adding playful and interactive touches to the celebration.
Speaking about the celebration, Librarian Leela, shared that International Library Day is not only about books but also about “celebrating curiosity, creativity, and the lifelong joy of reading.” She added that the event reflected the college’s commitment to nurturing a love for learning beyond classrooms.
The library buzzed with excitement as students enthusiastically explored each corner of the event. One student from English/Geography Year II remarked, “Our library is always beautiful, but today it felt magical! The activities, books, and decorations made it so lively and fun.”
Speaking about the event, Karma Samten Zangmo, the Chief Librarian, said, “Today, our library felt like a little world of its own. Seeing students gather around books and activities with such excitement truly warmed my heart. It reminded me why we do what we do — to keep the love of reading alive in every student.”
The celebration, which lasted half a day, had exactly that effect, leaving students and faculty with a renewed sense of curiosity, excitement, and appreciation for the library as a space of discovery, creativity, and community.
