M.Ed Students Lead Campus Cleaning Drive Under the Theme “Our Waste, Our Responsibility”
In an inspiring move towards environmental stewardship, the Master of Education (M.Ed) students of Samtse College of Education initiated a campus-wide cleaning campaign on 22 October 2025, under the theme “Our Waste, Our Responsibility.” The campaign marks the beginning of a new sustainability initiative that will henceforth be held every first Thursday of the month, turning cleanliness and waste management into a regular community practice on campus.
The launch saw enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and staff, who came together with a shared sense of purpose and commitment to maintain a clean and green campus. The collaborative effort transformed the event into a strong demonstration of unity and civic responsibility.
As part of the campaign, pits were dug at strategic locations across the campus to manage organic waste effectively. Additionally, wire-mesh bins were fabricated and placed in various areas to promote segregation of dry and wet waste, ensuring a more systematic and sustainable approach to waste disposal.
Faculty members and staff joined students as active participants for the campaign. Their involvement served as a mark of solidarity and motivation, reinforcing the message that caring for the environment is a shared responsibility. By taking part in the cleaning activities, they emphasised the importance of owning and managing one’s own waste rather than relying solely on designated cleaning personnel.
The College management commended the M.Ed students for taking the lead in this meaningful initiative, appreciating their effort to set an example as senior students. The President, Dr Sonam Rinchen highlighted that such leadership embodies the values of responsibility, service, and community spirit that the college strives to instill in all its learners.
The M.Ed students expressed that this initiative aims not only to keep the campus clean but also to cultivate a culture of environmental mindfulness and accountability among all members of the college community. With plans to sustain the campaign as a monthly event, the college hopes to embed the practice of waste management into its institutional culture.
As Dr Kinzang Dorji, Head of STEM Department aptly noted, “When we take care of our surroundings, we are also taking care of ourselves.”
The campaign’s first day ended with a sense of pride, unity, and renewed determination to make Samtse College of Education a model for sustainable campus living: one clean-up at a time.
