A Poster Presentation on “Save drinking water in Samtse”
On the 9th of April, M.Ed 2nd year students conducted a poster presentation on the theme ‘Save Drinking Water in Samtse’.
In the event, M. Ed students displayed creative posters and models prepared by them. Both students and lecturers took part by asking questions to enhance their understanding and knowledge of project based learning.
One of the M.Ed students, Mr. Sherub Chophel, explained that this poster presentation was about project-based learning under place-based education, which is one of the modules that M.Ed students are studying. He also said they were able to experience the realities of project based learning through hands-on learning as a result of the project., “Through such initiative, we will be able to assist school students in carrying out project-based learning to promote student-centred learning”, he added.
Mr. Sonam Thinly, M.Ed 2nd year mathematics student shared, due to the nature of their subject background one of the challenges was their lack of expertise on using the test-kits. He also shared that they tried to bridge this gap by gathering and analyzing statistical data based on the theme. Obtaining true data was difficult as people were reluctant to express their views, he added.
Another M. Ed student, Mrs. Phub Lhamo shared that her team chose to do their study in the Alipakha community hypothesizing the water there is not safe to drink. Their group found the water is not a major problem because many residents appeared to have enough water supplies both in the winter and in the summer. However, she mentioned that there was no proper water connection within the houses and that most of the water taps were non-functional. She added, one of the difficulties they encountered during this project was not being able to get accurate statistics because residents were newly settled and do not know anything about the water issues of the community.
Finally, she also mentioned that this form of project-based learning will be of high benefit to high school students in particular by allowing them to learn more by exploring the lifestyles of the people in the community.
The poster display was carried under the supervision of the science faculty of the College.
