Honouring Legacy, Inspiring the Future: SCE Celebrates 57 Years of Educational Excellence
Samtse College of Education (SCE) celebrated its 57th Foundation Day with a vibrant and reflective ceremony, honouring its significant role in shaping Bhutan’s education landscape since its establishment in 1968. The event was graced by the Hon’ble Chief Guest Dasho Zanglay Dukpa—a member of the very first batch of students in 1968 and a pioneering figure in Bhutanese educational reform. Also in attendance were the Wing Commander of RBA Samtse, Dasho Dzongrab of Samtse, other senior officials, sector heads of Samtse Dzongkhag, along with the college’s faculty and students.
In his welcome address, the President of SCE paid tribute to His Majesty the Third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, whose foresight led to the establishment of the College to train home-grown teachers. Highlighting the college’s remarkable journey—from its modest beginnings with 41 teacher trainees to producing over 7,000 educators who have served the country, he emphasised that Foundation Day as not only a commemoration of past achievements but also a reaffirmation of the college’s enduring commitment to nation-building through education.
Continuing his address, the President highlighted the essential role of counselling in today’s education system, recognising it as a crucial pillar in supporting students’ emotional and psychological well-being—fully aligned with Bhutan’s holistic development. Describing students as the ‘heartbeat of the college,’ he urged all students to pursue their aspirations with dedication and to carry forward the noble dreams of His Majesty the King with integrity, service, and purpose, ensuring that SCE remains a beacon of educational excellence.
A key feature of the celebration was the second Sherab Yarphel Talk series with Dasho Zangley Dukpa, who shared deeply personal insights and reflections on the evolution of SCE and Bhutan’s education system. He spoke candidly about the transformative journey of education in the country and the enduring relevance of the teaching profession. “Changes must take place; we must acknowledge the changes. Things must change, but there are certain things that remain,” he observed, emphasising that while society and its expectations evolve, the core responsibility of a teacher—as a moral, intellectual, and cultural guide—remains timeless.
Dasho Zangley also stressed the importance of aspiration and perseverance, encouraging students to dream big and remain resilient in the face of challenges. He noted that the progress of SCE itself is a testament to what visionary goals, combined with persistent effort, can achieve over time. “Aspiration gives direction, and perseverance gives strength. Together, they lead to transformation,” he said, inspiring students to stay committed to their goals. He further highlighted the cultural reverence for the title Lopen—meaning “the lord or king of learning”—as a uniquely Bhutanese recognition of the noble role teachers play in shaping not just intellect but also values, identity, and national unity.
Reflections were also shared by distinguished alumni Mr. Rinzin Dorji, Vice Principal, Samtse HSS and Mrs. Goma Chhetri, teacher, Samtse LSS, both expressing heartfelt gratitude for the college’s lasting impact on their lives and careers. The event also featured a vibrant lineup of cultural performances by students, showcasing Bhutan’s rich traditions and reinforcing the college’s continued role in nurturing both intellectual and cultural growth.
The ceremony concluded with heartfelt appreciation to all attending guests and students. The celebration reaffirmed Samtse College of Education’s enduring mission to inspire, educate, and lead with purpose—and to carry forward its legacy as a vital pillar of Bhutan’s national development.
