English debate competition was organized by the College Language Department in collaboration with the Literary club. The final was conducted on 30th April where the top 10 debaters debated on the topic, “Social Media Should Be Banned in the School” The competition was held in two rounds, the elimination round and the final round, where three participants from each class participated in the elimination round. Top ten debaters were selected and divided into two groups of five members each.

The competition which was held in the College Auditorium at 4:50 p.m. and was witnessed by all students and faculty. Nidup Zangmo, first year BA in Social Work from the Opposition team was announced as the best speaker in the competition. Phuntsho Choden Tenzing, one of the finalists from BA in Social Work 2nd year shared, “I was very happy about this topic for the debate because it means that the institute as a whole is concerned about the growing negative impacts of social media on children. I realized that children shouldn’t actually be allowed to use social media in school because it indeed brings a lot of distraction and poses threat to them since cyberbullying, illicit contents and spreading of fake allegations and defamations are on the rise now”. The Opposition team won the debate.

Literary coordinator, Rupa Rai said that the objective for conducting such debate is mainly to provide students with an avenue for self-expression. It provides them opportunities to think critically and articulate their thoughts into well-structured words. It was also to let the club members get the experience of holding such events and be better event organizers. She also shared that the audience will get inspired by the skills and audacity presented by their friends. Literary club members also recited a poetry at the end of the event
