Programme Overview

The Master of Education in Mathematics Education is a specialised postgraduate programme aimed at developing competent, reflective, and research-oriented mathematics educators. The programme provides opportunities for teachers to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts, strengthen pedagogical practices, and develop the capacity to engage in educational research. It focuses on contemporary approaches to mathematics teaching, curriculum development, assessment, and the use of evidence-informed practices to enhance learning outcomes.

Through a blend of theoretical knowledge, practical application, and inquiry-based learning, the programme enables educators to critically examine existing practices and develop innovative responses to challenges in mathematics education. It encourages continuous professional growth by fostering analytical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Graduates are prepared to contribute to improved classroom practices, educational innovation, curriculum enhancement, and leadership in mathematics education. The programme responds to both national educational priorities and global developments, equipping educators to make meaningful contributions to schools and the wider education system.

Duration of the programme

The programme is an eighteen-month full-time course of study leading to the award of Master of Education in Mathematics by the Royal University of Bhutan.

Why enroll in the programme?

The Master of Education in Mathematics Education programme provides an excellent opportunity for secondary school mathematics teachers and aspiring educational leaders to advance their professional knowledge and expertise. The programme strengthens participants’ mathematical content knowledge, pedagogical competence, and research skills, enabling them to enhance the quality of mathematics teaching and learning in their classrooms.

Through a combination of advanced coursework, practical experiences, and research, students develop the capacity to think critically, reflect on their professional practice, and design innovative solutions to emerging challenges in mathematics education. The programme also prepares graduates to respond effectively to the changing demands of education in both local and global contexts, empowering them to contribute to curriculum innovation, educational research, and leadership within schools and the wider education sector

Learning Outcomes of the Programme

On completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  1. demonstrate a higher level of competency in content knowledge and pedagogical skills in learning and teaching of Mathematics;
  2. formulate a philosophy of education and incorporate it into the professional practice of Mathematics learning and teaching;
  • demonstrate the ability to effectively apply advanced content knowledge in the learning and teaching of Mathematics;
  1. provide innovative solutions to address emerging Mathematics of contemporary issues;
  2. identify interventions to remedy common misconceptions in Mathematics;
  3. demonstrate research competency through the application of relevant methods and apply the findings in their classroom practice;
  • reflect on and share their experiences as classroom practitioners to improve their own and others’ classroom practices;
  • apply contemporary teaching, learning and assessment methods in their practice;
  1. exhibit innovation in designing, performing and evaluating mathematics laboratory practical;
  2. apply appropriate research methods and design to conduct research in Mathematics;
  3. develop the necessary professional skills and competencies for the advancement of Mathematics Education;
  • facilitate professional development of other teachers in their schools/Dzongkhag related to Mathematics;
  • use effective communication skills through various platforms/medium for a range of audiences;
  • engage in self-learning, reflection, and habits of lifelong learning to instil a sense of scientific temper and curiosity; and
  1. exhibit appropriate qualities expected of a Mathematics teacher, including the Code of Conduct for Teachers, Bhutanese values and etiquette.

Programme delivery and support

The Master of Education in Mathematics Education employs a learner-centred, research-informed approach aligned with the principles of Educating for Gross National Happiness. The programme integrates theory, practice, and inquiry to develop reflective and innovative mathematics educators. Learning is facilitated through interactive lectures, discussions, tutorials, collaborative activities, blended learning, practical tasks, and research engagement. Students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and evidence-informed teaching skills through academic writing, projects, and dissertation work supported by continuous tutor guidance and the Virtual Learning Environment.

The Coolege also provides comprehensive learning resources and support facilities to meet the needs of postgraduate students. Classrooms are well equipped with ICT facilities, internet connectivity, projectors, and modern learning arrangements. The Library-cum-IT block offers extensive print and electronic resources, including access to international databases and online journals. The College provides adequate computing facilities, Wi-Fi connectivity, Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), and ICT support services. Students have access to accommodation, self-catering facilities, sports and fitness amenities, bookstore, reprographic services, multimedia facilities, academic support, counselling, and postgraduate workstations. These facilities create a supportive environment that promotes independent learning, research engagement, collaboration, creativity, and overall student wellbeing.

HOW TO APPLY

The announcement for the programme will be made through MoE and SCE websites well before the beginning of the academic year. The aspiring students must apply on­line. The RUB website will also contain the detailed procedures for the online application.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The selection criteria will be announced through the MoE and SCE websites.

  • BSc/PgDE/BEd/in Mathematics
  • Possessing a high level of interpersonal skills
