Programme Overview
The Bachelor of Education (BEd) Secondary In Information Technology programme is built on the belief that technology is integral to modern education, offering a wide array of tools and opportunities to enhance the quality of learning experience and that as technology continues to evolve, its role in education is likely to become even more prominent and transformative.This programme aims to prepare competent and committed future teachers who can effectively teach coding and digital literacy from class VII-X in Secondary schools.The programme is crafted intelligently to combine education theory and practice with a strong focus in the mastery of the use and navigation of the fundamentals of computing and the use of emerging technology such as coding and programming, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, computer algorithms and data science, etc. in the classroom to adequately harness the power and promise of information technology as a powerful tool for an education that is current and suitable for learners who grow and live in a digital age.
The BEd Secondary in IT programme places a strong emphasis on developing both subject-specific content knowledge and pedagogical expertise. Additionally, the programme focuses on cultivating an understanding of the diverse spectrum of learners that teachers encounter in their classrooms. Besides grooming a new generation of professional competent and academically knowledgeable IT teachers for the secondary school system in the country, this programme also aspires to nurture dedicated, well-informed, and passionate teachers who not only excel in their profession but also embody the right attitude, and are adaptable to the changing needs of Bhutanese society and the broader global landscape.
This programme is an academically rigorous and highly rewarding programme that equips students for a fulfilling career in education. It is a forward-thinking, futuristic, and innovative programme that purports to equip aspiring teachers with an advanced knowledge and skills to thrive in the digital age. The blend of a strong foundation in educational theory with a deep understanding of technology integration, the graduates of this programme will be prepared to inspire and educate the next generation of learners in an increasinlgy digital world.
Upon graduation, the graduates of this programme will be well-prepared to make a positive impact on the lives of their students and the Bhutanese community at large.
Through this programme of pre-service teacher education, the students will be able to:
- demonstrate proficiency in designing, analyzing, and implementing efficient computer algorithms for solving a wide range of computational problems;
- leverage cloud platforms for data storage, facilitate collaboration and deploy applications to enhance teaching and learning experience;
- employ Artificial Intelligence(AI) and Machine Learning(ML) educational platforms to enrich student learning in educational settings;
- curate multimedia instructional materials using a variety of available visual design software and tools with a focus on enhancing the teaching and learning experience;
- create an innovative educational application designed to make a positive and meaningful impact on the teaching and learning experiences within secondary schools;
- design and implement curricula, learning and teaching methodologies, and assessment models in accordance with school curricula;
- create a conducive classroom environment that supports optimal learning opportunities for all learners;
- integrate knowledge, skills, and values in Bhutanese classroom contexts;
- apply the principles of educational action research to their professional development;
- demonstrate knowledge of human development and learning theories in order to respond positively to the psychosocial needs of adolescents;
- establish ethical relationships and collaborate with colleagues and the community to achieve educational goals;
- gain insights into the opportunities and challenges of education in Bhutan through school immersion and teaching practice;
- exhibit good classroom practices, time management skills, communication skills, and record keeping procedures that support and enhance student learning;
- demonstrate a sound programming and digital literacy knowledge and skills for effective teaching in secondary schools; and
- demonstrate the outlooks of professional beginning teachers in their teaching and commitment to continuous self-improvement by participating in meaningful professional engagement, collaboration, reflective classroom practices, and innovation that contribute to the renewal of the teaching profession.
Curriculum Structure
The BEd Secondary in IT programme curriculum structure is organised on a modular basis with a total of 120 credit points, distributed across eight academic semesters. It comprises fifteen elective modules in ICT, three mathematics in programming modules, two physics in programming modules, eleven professional development modules, four personal development modules and a well-structured semester-long Teaching Practice (TP) component, worth 60 credit points (equivalent to 5 modules).
The modules are thoughtfully structured and delivered in a cohesive and progressive manner to ensure that students derive maximum benefits and achieve the essential standards of teacher professionalism. The initial phase of the program focuses on professional development modules such as Adolescent Development (PSY101), Learning Process, Educational Assessment and Evaluation (EAS), Action Research (RES) and Teaching Skills and Teaching Strategies (PDY), in addition to elective modules aligned with the subject of specialisation. These modules are completed before students embark on their teaching practice during the sixth semester of the third year.
Similarly, the latter part of the program includes professional modules like Curriculum Studies (CUS) and Action Research Project (RES) along with two personal development modules– Guidance and Counseling (EDN), and Inclusive Education. These modules are offered concurrently with six elective modules corresponding to the subject of specialization in the seventh and eighth semester of the fourth year.
Professional modules are designed to foster the growth of professional knowledge, covering topics such as understanding adolescent psychology, teaching strategies, curriculum development, assessment practices, and research skills, all aimed at equipping students with the ability to innovate in their teaching methods. On the other hand, personal development modules focus on nurturing students’ personal growth, including basic counseling skills, effective communication, and the promotion of effective teaching and positive interactions with their students.
The ICT elective modules are aimed at allowing them to become sound and competent in their elective subjects intended to teach at the secondary level schools. Table 1 shows the progressive arrangement of the programme structure that the students enrolled in this course will go through during their four years of pre-service teacher education at the College.
