Samtse College of Education (SCE) extended a warm welcome to its newly appointed and adjunct faculty members through a traditional Khadar ceremony, marking the beginning of their journey with the College community.

The ceremony brought together new and adjunct faculty, who were formally introduced to the College. The adjunct faculty welcomed include Dr. Nandu Giri, Mr. Dorji Drukpa, Mr. Rinzin Dorji, and three IT lecturers— Mr. Anup Gurung, Mr. Phurba Dorji Tamang, and Mr. Sangay Thinley—while the new faculty include Mr. Nima Tharchen, Mrs. Kinley Dema, and Mrs. Sonam Choden. Mr. Karma Nidup joins the College on deputation.

Among the adjunct faculty, Dr. Nandu Giri is a Professor of Chemistry with a PhD in Environmental Chemistry and nearly four decades of service at SCE. Dorji Drukpa, specialising in English literature and language, holds an MA in English from the University of Nottingham and brings a rich career in education dating back to 1987. Rinzin Dorji joins the Dzongkha faculty, contributing to the teaching and promotion of the national language. The three adjunct IT lecturers—Anup Gurung, Phurba Dorji Tamang, and Sangay Thinley—are graduates of Gyalpozhing College of Information Technology (GCIT), strengthening the College’s ICT teaching with their expertise in computer science.

Karma Nidup, joining on deputation, is an Assistant Professor with extensive experience in teacher education and counselling. He holds a Master of Education from the University of New Brunswick, Canada, and his research interests lie in Contemplative Buddhist Philosophy and Educating for Gross National Happiness.

Among the new faculty, Nima Tharchen brings 11 years of teaching experience and holds a Master of Arts in English. Kinley Dema joins as an Associate Lecturer in English, holding a Master of Education in Leadership and Management and a Master of Arts in Linguistics, with an active record of research and publication. Sonam Choden joins with an MSc in Chemistry from Andhra University, completed under the Nehru Wangchuck Scholarship, and brings over 15 years of teaching experience.

Following the welcome ceremony, the new faculty took part in an academic orientation programme on 3rd August 2026, led by Kuenzang Gyeltshen, Dean of Academic Affairs. The orientation covered key aspects of academic life at the College, including academic regulations and their alignment with the regulations of the Royal University of Bhutan, along with the College’s Vision, Mission, and core values. Guided by its philosophical commitment to right View, right Contemplation, and right Action, and its motto “Ever Higher, Better Ever,” SCE aspires to be a centre of excellence committed to research and innovation in education.

The orientation concluded with an overview of the diverse range of programmes offered at SCE. At the master’s level, the College offers Master of Education programmes in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics, as well as in English, Geography, and History, alongside the newly launched Master of Arts in Contemplative Counselling. Its postgraduate offerings include a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, a Postgraduate Diploma in Contemplative Counselling Psychology, and a part-time Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education. At the undergraduate level, the College offers Bachelor of Education (Secondary) programmes in Arts, ICT, and Science. Looking ahead, SCE also plans to introduce Master of Education programmes in Educational Technology and Economics.

With this diverse academic portfolio and the addition of its new and adjunct faculty, the College looks forward to their collective contributions in nurturing the next generation of educators.
