Programme Overview

The main goal of the PgDE Programme is to train secondary school teachers capable of teaching a subject of specialization from classes IX to XII as agreed towards the University‟s plans to rationalize teacher education programmes. The programme also aims at developing prospective teachers who have love for their profession.

  1.  Produce post-graduates teachers capable of teaching one subject of specialisation from classes IX to XII1. Develop professional maturity in terms of experience, competence and confidence
    2. Induct and orient the students to the teaching profession and the school system
    3. Promote a desire for continuous professional growth and for in-depth knowledge of the areas of their one teaching subject and other aspects of education
    4. Develop in graduates of the programme the ability to participate in the various activities of the school
    5. Develop adequate knowledge and skills in the subject of specialization and a lifelong desire for further exploration and inquiry in these disciplines
    6. Enhance the student‟s professional knowledge, skills and attitudes required for effective teaching in Bhutanese secondary schools
    7. Support the student‟s personal development through academic skills, communication in Dzonghka and the benefits of counseling and career education
    8. Develop in graduates of the programme the knowledge and skills to use action research to improve their practice.

Learning outcomes of the Programme

Upon completion of the programme, the students should be able to:

  • develop  pedagogical  content  knowledge  for  effective  teaching  in  the  subject  of specialization;
  • update the content knowledge, apply different skills, and strategies in teaching;
  • promote a desire for continuous professional growth and for in-depth knowledge in the
  • area of one‟s teaching subject and other aspects of education;
  • apply theories of learning and classroom management in the classroom teaching;
  • set tests papers and evaluate students‟ performance judiciously;
  • provide effective feedback to students
  • teach the subject of specialization effectively up to class XII level;
  • enhance the abilities to teach students of different abilities, interests and backgrounds effectively and creatively;
  • design   assessment   tools for assessing the students‟ learning outcomes related to knowledge, skills and   values that will improve student learning through constructivist feedback mechanism;
  • develop the knowledge and skills to use action research to improve their own classroom teaching practice; and,
  • use variety of teaching aids to motivate students;
