Professional Department Profile
The Professional Department is the soul of Samtse college of Education and it is constituted for the delivery of all professional and personal development modules for the various programmes offered at the college. The programmes offered at present are B. Ed Primary & Secondary, PgDE and Distance B.Ed. In addition to the delivery of the modules the Professional Department is also responsible for developing new modules and course packs from time to time. The department further updates and modifies the professional modules whenever such demands arise. The Department also decides which faculty member delivers which module. At present there are few fulltime faculty members in the department however faculty members of other departments share the teaching load.
For respective award programs the professional and personal development studies modules offered are:
a) PgDE – eight modules in professional development studies and two modules in personal development studies.
b) B. Ed Secondary and Primary (3yr) - ten modules in professional development studies I (EDN I), five modules in professional development studies II (EDN II), and thirteen modules in personal development studies.
c) B. Ed Secondary and Primary (4yr) - sixteen modules in professional development studies (i.e. including five Teaching Practice modules) and four modules in personal development studies.
Aims and purpose of Professional Development Studies.
The objectives of the courses included in the area of study called Professional Development Studies are to:
1. Enhance student teachers’ professional knowledge, skills and attitudes required for effective teaching in Bhutanese schools;
2. Learn teaching skills and strategies including research methods to make teaching and learning appropriate for particular learners;
3. Enhance the knowledge about learners in terms of the principles and processes of learning.
4. Enhance the knowledge about curriculum development processes, feedback on and assessment of student progress and achievement;
5. Learn about current developments and issues related to the Bhutanese education system;
6. Learn about education systems and their organisation;
7. Make teaching-learning interactive and activity-based as appropriate; and
8. Acquire knowledge and skills related to community development and participation.
