Department of Social Science
The Department of Social Science offers electives, which includes Geography and History for the B. Ed Secondary and Geography, History, Economics and Business Studies for the PgDE. These elective subjects are intended to provide student teachers with good content knowledge that are reflected in the topics mentioned in the modules and also skills in delivering those contents in Bhutanese classrooms. One compulsory module of Social Studies is offered for the B. Ed Primary. There are 10 Geography and 10 history modules for B. Ed Secondary. While for PgDE there are two modules each in Geography, History, Economics and Business Studies.

Aims and Objectives
The general aim of the programme offered by the Department of Social Studies is to:

• Enhance the content knowledge, skills and also attitude towards effective teaching of the student teachers.

The specific objective of the programme included in this area of study is to provide student teachers the opportunities to:

• Examine critically the political, cultural, economic and social conditions of Bhutan from its ancient time till today

• Teach Geography, History, Economics and Business Studies effectively in Bhutanese schools

• Enhance the skills in interpreting, analyzing, comparing and evaluation

• Enhance the knowledge of the Geography, History, and Economics of some of the countries of Europe, America Asia and Africa that shaped the present world scenario.

• Enhance the knowledge and understanding of the decision making process involved in human interaction with the skills necessary to become effective decision maker.
